New developer gets permission to change plans for 185 'unimaginative' homes

A new housing developer has been given the green light for its designs for 185 homes at a Whitnash site already designated for housing.

AC Lloyd had been granted full planning permission for the development in October 2024, but the site near Chesterton Gardens has since been taken over by Bellway Homes.

Despite the objections of nearly 60 locals, councillors at Warwick District Council last week granted planning permission for the designs of the homes to be changed, as Bellway looks to bring in its own range of builds to the site.

Speaking at last week's planning meeting MP for Warwick and Leamington Matt Western said the development was full of holes.

"This application appears to be minor amendments to the present application," he said.

"I would suggest, these are significant changes with new house types, the relocation of the substation and the addition of a foul pumping station.

"This proposed development lacks the necessary infrastructure to support 185 homes, as I have said many times before.

"I have been campaigning against this for almost 10 years.

"There is no provision for GP surgeries, local school capacity and of course Stagecoach has said there will be no provision of public transport."

However, despite the objections councillors said they had little choice to approve the latest application, as planning permission for the land to be developed had already been approved.

Cllr Bill Gifford said: "I have not been happy with the single access route but we are where we are but the inspector [who approved the previous application] thought the single access was ok.

"In essence what we are talking about is, do we feel we can refuse the application because of the Bellway designs? I don't think so."

He continued: "I feel we need to grant this application. We have no option.

"It may not be ideal, the designs are not brilliant, they are not exciting, they are not imaginative but they are acceptable.

"That is what we have got to accept."
