To begin, I want to reference the two incidents in Leamington town centre last weekend.

On Friday evening (16 October), there was a stabbing of a teenager near the Bandstand in the Pump Room Gardens.

As I write this on Monday morning, the victim remains in hospital but is in a stable condition, and an 18-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

In the early hours of Sunday morning (18 October), a man in his 20s was violently assaulted and left with head injuries on Chandos Street.

Police are carrying out enquiries and are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident, may have doorbell, CCTV or dashcam footage in the area, or has information which would help identify the person responsible.

Such incidents are thankfully not commonplace in our towns, and the presence of two such incidents in one weekend will, I know, have concerned many locally.

I am in contact with the Police and receiving regular updates and will be working with local partners to understand how we can best ensure people feel safe in our towns and villages.

My thoughts are with the victims, and I hope they make a full and swift recovery.

In more positive local news, it was great to see the Warwick Mop back in town last weekend and the Runaway Mop today and today.

It is a much-loved event in our town, which I know is always eagerly anticipated.

I hope all who attended and are going this weekend have a great time, and huge thanks to the organisers for putting on a brilliant event in the town.

Turning to Parliament, I want to share an update on some of the work the Committee I Chair, the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy, is currently doing.

On Monday, we held the first public session of our inquiry into Space Resilience. It will explore how the UK can protect and strengthen its resilience in an increasingly contested space environment.

While outer space may seem a world away, it is a crucial domain for our economy and our national security. Satellite services underpin almost every aspect of modern life, from card payments and sat navs to critical national infrastructure and transport networks.

Were our satellite systems to be affected in any way – either from natural causes such as changes in Space Weather or from hostile actions of other states- businesses would be disrupted, critical services would be affected, and emergency responders would face significant challenges in carrying out their work.

Our national security is also deeply dependent on space capabilities, with modern military operations relying on satellite technology for communications, navigation, intelligence and surveillance.

The scale of their economic importance is staggering. A loss of satellite services would cost the economy £1.4 billion every single day. The Government's own analysis shows that just under a fifth of the UK's GDP, worth around £454 billion, depends on satellite services.

The reality is that no domain is off limits. Grey zone attacks have become the new normal; we saw that here in Warwick and Leamington with the Jaguar Land Rover cyber-attack, and that means our outer space is a target.

Space is now a critical strategic domain, every bit as important as land, sea, air and cyberspace, and it has become a potential target for hostile actors. It is vital to our security, our economy and our everyday lives. We cannot do without it and must ensure it is resilient. That is what the Committee and I will be exploring in the coming weeks.

As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any issues or concerns you would like to raise with me. I can be reached at [email protected] or on 01926 882006.
