Roof safety works planned to preserve Leamington's historic Royal Pump Rooms

An application has been submitted for roof safety improvements at one of Leamington's historic Royal Pump Rooms to help ensure the building's long-term maintenance and conservation.

The application seeks Listed Building Consent to install permanent roof safety and access equipment at the Grade II listed Royal Pump Rooms.

According to the Heritage Statement, the proposed works would include the installation of: " Better safe horizontal fall arrest line systems to Roof Areas, including stainless steel anchor points, lifeline cables and associated fixings, step units to certain roof areas to improve safe movement between roof levels, around 200 metres of fixed, freestanding and collapsible guardrail systems and a ladder access platform to improve safe access between roof areas."

It comes after previous roof repairs which took place back in September last year (2025), following significant funding from Arts Council England's MEND (Museum Estate and Development) programme.

The application further states that the new safety equipment has been carefully designed to minimise its impact on the listed building.

Most of the installations would be positioned at roof level, where they would be largely concealed from public view, while many of the components would be freestanding and require little or no alteration.

The application concludes that the works would result in: "limited alteration to the historic fabric, no change to the building's architectural character, and have been designed to minimise visual and physical impact while providing essential long-term safety improvements."
