Leamington residents could soon see a new 20mph speed limit introduced across a number of residential streets under proposals being put forward by Warwickshire County Council.

The scheme would replace the current 30mph limit on 19 roads in the area, including Leam Terrace, Church Street, Chapel Street, Mill Street, New Street and Priory Terrace.

According to the council, the proposals follow requests from local residents and Cllr Will Roberts and are being funded through the councillors' Delegated Budget Fund.

Council officers say speed surveys carried out in the area show average vehicle speeds are already low enough to support a reduction to 20mph without the need for extensive traffic-calming measures. Warwickshire Police have also indicated their support for the plans.

As part of the scheme, three new separation refuges would be installed along Leam Terrace, alongside new road markings. A pedestrian refuge near the junction of Leam Terrace and Willes Road would also be changed.

The council said the lower speed limit would improve road safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists while bringing the area into line with other nearby 20mph zones.

In the statement of reasons, the Council stated: "The reduced speed limit will help from a road safety perspective, influencing driver behaviour.

"The proposals seek to secure expeditious and safe movement of vehicular traffic and for other road users, including pedestrians."

The roads included in the proposed 20mph zone are:

  • Chapel Street
  • Church Street
  • Church Terrace
  • Clinton Street
  • Farley Street
  • Forefield Place
  • George Street
  • Gloucester Street
  • Gordon Street
  • Leam Terrace
  • Mill Road
  • Mill Street
  • New Street
  • Packington Place
  • Plymouth Place
  • Priory Terrace
  • Regent Place
  • Rotherfield Close
  • Russell Terrace

If approved, the scheme would be introduced through a formal Speed Limit Order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

Residents will have the opportunity to comment on the proposals as part of the statutory consultation process before any final decision is made.
