Negotiations around the A46 update 'bridge to nowhere' continue to rumble on, with no target completion date, or even a date for work to resume in sight.

Now over two years behind schedule, roadworks at the A46 Stoneleigh junction have all but stalled as Warwickshire County Council negotiates a new contract for the scheme to be finished.

Costs have continued to rise for the highways scheme which was originally set to cost £38 million, but that bill is set to spiral beyond £57 million.

At an update earlier this year the Reform-led council said an update would come at the cabinet meeting on October 16, but this did not happen.

In a video shared on social media, Liberal Democrat councillor Ben Edwards said: "We are still in negotiations with National Highways, they are still commercially sensitive, so we have very little information. 

"In the meantime you have this hulking great lump of concrete sitting there doing absolutely nothing."

The 'bridge to nowhere' was installed in early 2022 but has been left unconnected since.

Initially there was a lack of available materials to finish the job which was followed by a dispute with contractors Colas over who was responsible.

The local authority is responsible for the cost overruns and has set aside £16 million to foot the bill.

Liberal Democrats have been vocal in their criticism of Reform - who inherited the situation from the previous Conservative administration - for a perceived lack of movement.

The opposition group has already written to the government to ask them to intervene.

In his update, Cllr Edwards also claimed the current arrangements at Stoneleigh are dangerous.

"Worse immediately is the road situation for my residents," he said. 

"The traffic here is aligned such that you have cars coming off a dual carriageway at speed going directly into cars trying to join the roundabout. 

"I have seen five collisions myself, other people have reported many more. People are getting hurt."
