Some Leamington Spa car parks could have their prices put up by Warwick District Council (WDC) next year - but not all of them.

Cabinet last night (October 22) considered price hikes across the district, with fee changes only set for a certain range of car parks.

In Leamington, price hikes are proposed at St. Peter's multi-storey car park, Bath Place, Court St, Packington Place, Rosefield Street, Bedford Street, Chandos Street.

These increases range from 10p extra for one hour and up to 65p extra for 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Covent Garden Surface, Adelaide Bridge, Covent Garden multi-storey car park, Station Approach and Lower Road are all likely to have their prices forzen.

Speaking at last night's cabinet meeting, Cllr Jonathan Chilvers said: "I am really pleased about where we have managed to get to with fees and charges this year.

"We set the scene by being able to put some more money in the budget in February, so that we didn't have to go for the unachievable 10 per cent targets in things like parking.

"What we have been able to do is freeze green bin charges and keep parking charges right down to either frozen or - for very high demand car parks - slightly higher."

Deciding on the changes, the council has bucketed the car parks into three different pots depending on how highly they were used.

WDC is also proposing to introduce a new 30-minute charge for certain car parks to boost their usage.

The car parks included in the proposed scheme are:

  • Warwick: New Street, Westgate, St Nicholas Park
  • Leamington: Covent Garden Surface, Covent Garden MSCP, Bedford Street, Packington Place, Bath Place, Court Street
  • Kenilworth: Square West

A council report said: "Subject to the required approval process, a 30-minute parking fee is proposed to be introduced in selected car parks aimed at supporting convenience shopping and short local visits, encouraging higher turnover and accessibility for local businesses.

"The impact of this new fee will be reviewed monthly by reviewing ticket data, occupancy data, and income to assess the impact of the new fee tariff."

The full council will need to vote on the changes before they are rubber-stamped.

The council is currently forecasted to make £4,376,200 from its car parks this year, with this figure budgeted to hit nearly £5 million next year.
