A man who shoplifted from two shops on Leamington Spa's Parade last night (May 21) tried to make his escape in a horse and cart.

A police statement said the man stole alcohol from two stores but was quickly stopped by officers.

The goods were recovered and returned and the man dealt with "by way of an out-of-court disposal".

"Officers responded to reports of a male taking a spirited approach to shoplifting, stealing alcohol from two stores along Parade earlier this evening… before making his getaway by horse and cart," police said.

"Unfortunately for him, it wasn't quite the great escape he reined it would be. Thanks to this very stable choice of transport, officers were able to quickly trot him down and bring things to a halt."
