A Green candidate has been elected to Royal Leamington Spa Town Council in the Leamington Clarendon Town by-election.

The election was called following the resignation of Jamie Sweeney, the former councillor for Leamington Clarendon, who stepped down due to ill health.

The Greens Party's Kiran Crawford, was elected last night (16 July) in a tight contest.

His win is particularly noteworthy, as party finished fourth in the town centre ward as recently as last September.

Speaking on his election, Cllr Crawford said: "Thank you to everyone who came out to vote and for the other parties for being fair and respectful.

"I will serve as a Councillor in the way I campaigned - positive, practical and committed to supporting all our communities in Clarendon."

Cllr Crawford received 474 votes, with a margin of victory at just 23 votes, ahead of the Lib Dems (451) with Labour down into third place (417).
