A popular wine merchant in Leamington Spa has closed down after sixteen years in business.

The Leamington Wine Company, located on Warwick Street, became unsustainable to support as a result of economic and political pressures.

Announcing its closure, the store released a statement stating it has now closed its doors for the last time.

In the statement, the wine store expressed gratitude for what it described as an amazing team, which the shop would not have survived without, for as long as it did.

In 2017, the store was recognised as the Independent Drinks Retailer of the Year at The Drink Retailing Awards.

The store retailed wines from across the world, local bottled ales, craft beers and spirits.

It also offered wine tasting and a wine club membership, including a hand-picked case of six bottles each month and pairing suggestions.

Describing the circumstances around the closure, the store listed inflated and unpredictable alcohol taxes and the cost of living crisis as factors impacting the entire wine and alcohol trade, with "disproportionate" impacts on smaller wine businesses.

The Leamington Wine Company wrote: "To our customers, we are deeply saddened to say goodbye and would like to quickly reassure you that any outstanding events of orders will be refunded as soon as possible.

"We thank you for your support of our small business over the years and encourage you to keep on shopping local as much as you can - now more than ever."

After the statement was posted on the company's Instagram, numerous comments were posted, expressing upset at hearing the closure news.

Local Leamington businesses event left comments.

Lola, a Leamington coffee and wine bar commented: "This is truly devastating, we're so sorry to hear this and adored stocking up on treats from you.

"Wish people truly understood how impossible it is at the moment.

"Thinking of you all.

"Thank you for your service."

Leamington's Warwick Street Kitchen cafe branch, also located on Warwick Street, wrote: "Heartbroken sending love."
