MP for Warwick and Leamington Matt Western has shared he is "proud" to have won the debate on the abolishment of Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs).

His response follows the government's announcement that the role will be scrapped at the end of their current term in 2028.

Mr Western shared on Facebook: "Many of you will know I called for this earlier this year in a debate which outlined what I view as the flaws of the position of Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) and why I think the money spent on PCCs can and should be better spent on frontline policing.

"Today, I'm proud to say that we've won that debate and the Government has announced they will be abolished."

He went onto state that public engagement with PCCs "has and continues to be low, despite them now existing for over a decade and there being no real increase in voter turnout in PCC elections. "

He continued: "Policing accountability has not been improved by the PCC model, and it is right that we recognise this and change the system to improve policing for residents.

"The saving of abolishing PCCs will allow the Government to invest an extra £20m in front-line policing every year. Money far better spent, I would say. This is what many of you fed back to me too."

Mr Western concluded by stated he would share more about what the "new model of accountability" will look like, but said for now, the news is "good" and "welcome"
