A driver was stopped in Leamington after driving through a red light without headlights and found to be more than three times over the legal drink-drive limit.

Officers stopped a white Kia on Leicester Street in Leamington after the driver reportedly cut across their path and went through a red light with no headlights on.

Police said the driver struggled to stand upright despite telling officers they had drunk "two pints".

The driver was arrested and recorded 110ug of alcohol per 100ml of breath - over three times the legal drink-drive limit of 35ug. The individual was charged to appear at court and bailed to attend at a later date.

The incident was among two stops involving Kia drivers in the area.

A separate driver of a silver Kia was stopped on the A46 near Leamington and found to have accrued six penalty points within the first two years of holding a full driving licence.

As a result, the driver had reverted to a provisional licence. The vehicle was seized and the driver was reported.

Following the incident, Police have warned motorists about the consequences of refusing roadside testing and urged people not to drive if they have been drinking, taking drugs, are overly tired or are experiencing the effects of prescription medication.

Police further stated that driver impairment is a "fatal four" offence and a common contributing factor in fatal and serious injury collisions.

They added that officers have dealt with a "substantial number" of fatal and serious injury collisions across Warwickshire this year.
