Holland & Barrett, Mitchells & Butlers and a number of local businesses have been named and shamed by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) for not paying their staff the minimum wage.

Holland & Barrett withheld £153,079.29 to 2,551 workers.

Meanwhile, Mitchells & Butler - which operates the White Horse in Leamington - failed to pay £14,636.78 to 116 workers.

Birmingham-based Genting Casinos, which runs sites in Coventry and at Birmingham Airport, failed to pay £303,936.69 to 1,583 workers.

The government did not say which sites the staff who were underpaid worked at.

DBT said £600,000 has been repaid to workers in the West Midlands across 52 employers who were found not to be paying the national minimum wage.

Over £1 million in fines has also been dished out.

Employment Rights Minister Kate Dearden said: "This government is taking direct action to ensure workers get every penny they've earned, and to put an end to bad businesses undercutting good ones.

"We are proud to have delivered a strong minimum wage and enforcing it thoroughly is crucial in our mission to put pounds back in your pocket.

"I know this news will be welcomed by brilliant businesses across the country, those who know that happy well-paid staff are at the heart of building a successful company.

"With our new Fair Work Agency and the coming Employment Rights Bill, this government is keeping our promise to Britain to make work pay again"

Other local employers named include Coventry City Council (£5,167.58 owed), Arden Hotel Waterside in Stratford (£2,792.17), now wound-up Cheals of Henley Ltd (£2,164.35) and RTN Group Ltd in Warwick (£1,343.27).
