Local residents and drivers are being offered the chance to have their say on plans for automatic number plate recognition cameras in Leamington and several other locations across the county.

The proposals made by Warwickshire County Council include enforcing existing moving traffic restrictions using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.

In Leamington, the areas being considered for the restrictions are High Street and Bath Street.

Moving traffic restrictions include offences such as entering a yellow box junction when the exit is blocked, making prohibited turns, and driving through School Streets at certain times of the day.

The consultation does not propose any new traffic restrictions. Instead, it seeks views on whether Warwickshire County Council should apply to the Department for Transport for powers to enforce existing restrictions using ANPR cameras, alongside current police enforcement.

The other locations being considered for the restrictions include:

• Alcester Road / Greenhill Street / Arden Street / Grove Road in Stratford-upon-Avon
• Birmingham Road / High Street / Blythe Road in Coleshill
• Clifton Road / Moultrie Road and Lansdowne Place in Rugby
• Midland Road / Abbey Green in Nuneaton

Cllr Stephen Shaw, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Planning, said: "The locations identified have been selected using a range of evidence showing poor compliance with existing restrictions, which can create safety risks and congestion. Before taking any further steps, we want to hear what residents, organisations and road users think about these proposals.

"Feedback from the consultation will help us understand any concerns, inform any changes needed and shape our next steps."

The consultation opens today (8 September) and will run for six weeks, closing at midnight on 25 October.

Residents can take part via Warwickshire County Council's Ask Warwickshire platform .

Following the consultation, the Council's Cabinet will consider the findings and decide whether to apply for enforcement powers from the Department for Transport.

If approval is granted, a further publicity and warning period would be introduced before any camera enforcement begins.
