Plans to turn a farmer's field next to a major new housing development into a dedicated dog walking space have been given the green light by council planners.

James Mahon & Sons Ltd has been granted planning permission for the dog walking field on a two acre patch of land at the corner of Flat Rabbit Road and Banbury Road.

Signed off by Warwick District Council, the new venture will replace a piece of land used to graze sheep, next to the new Asps housing development.

The scheme will see the existing access of Banbury Road modified slightly, and a new pedestrian-only access created at the north-east corner of the field.

Plans show there will be enough space for three cars to park, and the field will be surrounded by a 1.8 metre tall mesh fence.

"Overall, this a sustainable location for a dog walking field, given its location adjacent to the 'Urban Area Boundary' of Leamington Spa and the 'major housing commitment'," the application said.

With bookings only to be taken online, the field will be available for hour or half hour slots, seven days per week from 7am to 9pm.

While council planners said the scheme "nt is not considered to constitute sustainable development", planning permission was granted.

A council report said: "Officers consider that given the specific nature of the proposed use, that the application site would be a suitable location for a secure dog walking field. 

"Accordingly, the proposal would be considered acceptable in principle."
