Warwick District Council has postponed this week's meeting for all councillors due to extreme weather conditions.

The authority announced on Tuesday that Wednesday's (June 24) meeting of full council would be delayed by a week, immediately rescheduling all business for Wednesday, July 1, due to the Met Office putting in place a red weather warning.

Temperatures have been rocketing since Monday with weather experts highlighting the potential for life-threatening health impacts, failure of heat-sensitive systems, power, water and gas supplies and mobile phone coverage amid expectations that temperatures could hit 40 degrees Celsius.

Running from 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday, the warning not only covers Leamington Spa, where the meeting was due to take place, but the entire district. It stretches from Birmingham down and across as far as Cardiff and London. The possibility of travel disruption also features prominently in the warning.

A district council statement read: "This decision has been taken to protect councillors, staff, press and members of the public, particularly those who may be vulnerable to extreme heat."

The agenda for the meeting remains unchanged with the usual leader and portfolio holder statements and questions to councillors running the authority followed by the annual reports of the council's overview and scrutiny panels.

From there, council will be asked to comment on and approve changes to the policy on council housing and sign off the council's new Community Climate and Nature Fund.
