Works have begun on nearly twenty trees at an athletics track which could become part of a major overhaul in the area between Warwick and Leamington.

Nineteen trees will be felled or cut back on safety grounds, due to their location bordering at Emscote Athletics Track, with facilities used on a daily basis by both adults and children.

Over the past few months, the trees were carefully monitored by the District Council's Green Spaces and County Council's Forestry teams.

The disease which affected several trees felled in February 2025 was found to have spread through the root system to many of the remaining trees.

Cllr Will Roberts, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood commented: "As custodians of this well used facility our priority is always to ensure the safety of the public. Though it is sad to see the removal of any tree, safety remains our priority.

"The planned relocation of the athletics facility will see the site become part of Elizabeth Park, where replacement trees will be planted."

The track has been subject to discussion, with residents having recently been given a first glimpse at what a new athletics track in the area could look like, with a planning application for the facility now been submitted.

The local authority has already backed the masterplan for Fusiliers Way, which includes the athletics set up and the new Myton Path.

WDC's application - submitted to its own planning team for approval - includes an eight-lane 400m athletics track, as well as a sports pavilion including a 'multi-purpose hall', and spectator stands.
