Council planners have given the green light for a community centre and church to be demolished by a brand new facility.

Myton Church Trustees have been given planning permission to flatten the Westbury Centre on Westlea Road.

An application submitted to Warwick District Council said the current building has a range of issues and a "limited timespan".

Designs show the new centre will be a two-storey building and have a car park with spaces for 14 vehicles.

The "fit-for-purpose community facility" will have multi-purpose rooms, classrooms, and a large hall "allowing a variety of uses".

A kitchen and café area will be included as well as provision for indoor sports.

The neighbouring Jubilee House will not be impacted by the works.

"The [current] site has access problems due to the sloping site and outdated toilet facilities," the application explained.

"The building is considered to be no longer suitable for the community and church activities being provided.

"With a vision to continue and expand services to the local community as well as serve a growing church congregation, along with the critical structural issues to the fabric, the existing Westbury Centre is no longer fit for purpose.

"It suffers from defects due to the presence of RAAC concrete and the existing building now has a limited lifespan.

"The current issues are limiting enhancement and expansion of community and church activities.

"A replacement building is therefore a necessity."

Royal Leamington Spa Town Council supported the application.

A fundraising campaign has also been launched for the redevelopment.

Plans were approved earlier this month.

"The proposed community centre represents a substantial upgrade on the existing centre and would enable a wider range and higher quality of facilities and services to be delivered," a council report said.
