A local brewery was the target of a burglary in the early hours of Sunday morning (8 March).

Cash and stock were both stolen from Windmill Hill Brewery and Taproom in Leamington Spa, with the theft causing damage to the property.

According to the brewery, the perpetrator made off with the weekend's takings as well as a quantity of stock.

In a statement shared online, the owners of Windmill Hill Brewery expressed they was "saddened" by the incident, which they described as a significant setback following a slow start to the year.

Taproom Manager, Ben Cowan told Nub News: "Many hospitality businesses are struggling under current conditions, especially smaller, independent ones like Windmill Hill Brewery. January and February are the hardest of the year; the first weekend in March was wonderful. In the Taproom, on Thursday, we hosted a charity quiz night in aid of Shelter, a homeless charity; we showed the 6 Nations Rugby, and put on a local live music duo; we ran our hugely popular community Jamming Sessions on Sunday; and then this happens.

"Our best weekend of the year, and then some guy on a scooter breaks in and takes the take. It's very upsetting. It feels like a violation; not just of the premises, but of everything that went into making the weekend events happen, and all that Gav and the team have put into the business over the years."

CCTV footage from the premises has been handed over to West Midlands Police, but the Windmill Hill team said identifying the suspect may prove difficult because the individual was wearing face coverings and gloves.

According to the business, the offender was riding an e-scooter.

The burglary resulted not only in stolen cash and products but also damage to doors and gates at the site, adding further costs for the small business.

Windmill Hill Brewery thanked customers and the local community for their continued support following the incident.

Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area or who recognises the e-scooter rider from CCTV footage is urged to come forward with information.
