Asbestos is to be removed from the roof as part of a makeover at Leamington Spa's Wetherspoon pub.

Listed building permission has been granted for a range of works at The Benjamin Satchwell.

Warwick District Council (WDC) has signed off on a variety of changes at the Parade pub, including repairs to the roof, removing "existing asbestos," new acoustic fencing and improvements to the bar area and kitchen.

"The proposals are required to support the continued operation of the premises as a public house, improve functionality, and undertake essential repair and maintenance works," an application to the council said.

Improvements at the bar will include more taps being installed.

External works will include new slates being laid on the roof, new flat roof coverings, new extraction equipment, new gas piping and "removal of asbestos-containing materials on the flat roof".

Wetherspoon said the works are "sensitive" to the grade II listed building and will "preserve the character and significance" of the pub.

The application was signed off by WDC earlier this month.

A council report said: "The proposals would not have a detrimental impact on the listed building.

"The proposals are in accordance with the aforementioned policies, and it is therefore recommended that this application for listed building consent be granted."
