'A momentous day in our history': MP Matt Western highlights 80 years since VE Day

This week marked 80 years since VE Day and the past few days have seen chance for people up and down the country to remember and honour those who defended the freedoms we enjoy today.
On 8th May 1945, people across Britain and across the world, celebrated Victory in Europe as World War Two came to an end.
A momentous day in our history and one of much relief and joy for the millions who celebrated on the streets all those years ago.
Now 80 years on, we continue to mark VE Day and remember the incredible sacrifices made by the Second World War generation who risked, and so often gave, their lives to defend our freedoms.
This week has been a chance to remember that generation and all they did to defend the British values we still hold so dear.
On Thursday, communities across the nation will light beacons to symbolise the 'light of peace' that emerged from almost 6 years of dreadful war.
A chance for our nation to come together to give thanks and honour the generation who showed such courage in the face of fascism.
So many decades later, we are surrounded by fewer and fewer of that generation who saw and gave so much.
It is vital we continue to share their stories and ensure we do not allow their testimony to be forgotten.
VE Day is also an important opportunity to recognise our armed forces and veterans who have served us since the Second World War and ensure we support them after their years of service and sacrifice, as they supported us and our nation during their years of service.
Too often, you hear stories of veterans who have struggled with life post-leaving the forces and struggle to get the support they rightfully deserve.
They have served our nation and worked to keep us safe, and we owe them our support as they transition to civilian life.
It is welcome to see the Government's announcement of VALOUR, a UK-wide veteran support system to ensure veterans have easier access to essential care and support than they do currently.
The aim of the system is to have VALOUR-recognised support centres in every nation and region of the UK to provide tailored local support to veterans.
This is a significant step in renewing the nation's contract with those who serve and is the right thing to do.
