We are seeking a hands-on and technically skilled Engine Test Technician to join a small, dynamic team supporting the operation of cutting-edge Internal Combustion & Emissions laboratory facilities. This role is pivotal in enabling the laboratory's capabilities and will work closely with the Lead Engineer, university academics, and third-party engineering teams. This is a contract role.
You will be directly involved in the preparation, instrumentation, and supervised operation of multi-cylinder engine test dyno facilities. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a collaborative environment on a university campus, supporting both current and future testing capabilities.
Key Responsibilities Support the setup and operation of engine test cells under the guidance of the Lead Engineer. Prepare test samples, including installation and instrumentation of internal combustion engines (spark and compression ignition). Assist in the development and execution of test methodologies in collaboration with customers and engineering teams. Perform detailed engine disassembly, inspection, and reassembly. Install and calibrate instrumentation such as thermocouples and pressure transducers. Conduct basic fabrication, welding, and machining tasks (advantageous). Ensure compliance with H&S and ISO standards (e.g., ISO 16949, ISO 14001). Support knowledge transfer and training of new team members. Perform routine maintenance and liaise with suppliers for equipment servicing.
Required Skills & Experience Strong understanding of internal combustion engine systems. Experience in engine preparation, instrumentation, and testing. Familiarity with laboratory operations and safety standards. Ability to work flexibly across a range of test facilities. Excellent teamwork and communication skills. Desirable: Fabrication, welding, and machining experience. Previous experience in a similar R&D or test environment.
Education & Qualifications City & Guilds Level 3 in a relevant discipline or a fully time-served apprenticeship.
